Vegas, baby

It has been a busy month for travel around here. Last month I zipped out to Vegas for a couple days to loaf with The Husband after he finished up at a conference. In what is fast becoming tradition, we hit a few of our favourite spots.

japadog!

If you’ve watched Anthony Boudain’s No Reservations, you’ve seen him feature the Japadog hot dog cart in the Vancouver episode (around the minute 7:20 mark in this youtube clip)  The one thing I wanted to be sure to do while we were home was to hit that cart.

They feature a few different styles, but basically it’s super duper friendly smiley Japanese folks serving hot dogs, Japanese-style.

Turkey dogs, pork dogs, beef dogs or veggie dogs on a regular bun but topped with daikon radish and miso or teriyaki sauce and nori. …

more cake pops

After I made those reindeer pops for Xmess, I started thinking of other cake pops to put on sticks. Conveniently, my father-in-law’s birthday is at the end of January, so it gave me plenty of time to plan. I became obsessed with the idea of making a whole whack of heads that looked just like him, so I took a shot at it this past week.

For reals, I can’t stop laughing at how funny these are. I used peanut butter and candy melts with a few vanillas thrown in to …

peanuuuuuuut, peanut butter

One of the places we always hit when we visit Minneapolis is Hell’s Kitchen for breakfast. When the Husband was there for a few months lo those many years ago, he stayed right around the corner from the restaurant. In early, he’d either get the walnut sausage bread or piles of toast purely as a vehicle to spoon up their delicious homemade peanut butter. Since I’m allergic to walnuts, I always went straight for the PB because man, is it good. You can buy the peanut butter to take home …

better than Jane Fonda

When I used to work in Whistler, I spent a lot of time shovelling snow. Like, a LOT of time. Every day in the winter, whether it had snowed or not and most days in the summer too, if I was up on the glacier. It’s been 10 years, but apparently I still take pride in digging out properly.

I know most people can’t stand shovelling, but I like to think of it as a workout instead of a chore. Every scoop of snow moved is another sit-up I don’t have …

cakeballs

Or as we’ve been calling them, Reindeer Balls!
I stumbled across Bakerella through someone’s favourites on flickr (I think) and after favouriting almost every single photo of her Cake Pops, added her as a contact. The minute I set eyes on her Reindeer Cakepops, I was smitten. I had to take a go. Every fibre of my being knew I needed to try to make them.
The process is pretty simple, but a little time consuming. In a nutshell, you bake a cake, crumble it up and mix it with icing. Then …

it’s beginning to look a lot like xmess

We put the tree up over the weekend, so it’s looking a lot more festive around here. The cats are all fired up to eat the tree and play under it, but since we upgraded to a taller, skinner fake one it hasn’t fallen over yet. Whew! The lights are on and the angel (at our house, Barbie) is at the top, we just haven’t put ornaments on. We do after all have a kitten to contend with.

See? Teek wants to eat it.

And so does Mother.

Indy doesn’t give a hoot …

mmm, bacon

And not just any old bacon, but brown sugar habanero bacon.
I’m not a food blogger and I don’t pretend to be a foodie, but I do like to eat (c’mon! Lookit me, I ain’t hiding that fact) and I sure as hell loves me some bacon. The husband has been monkeying around with some weekend breakfast food type experiments and this one is SO GOOD that it needs to be shared.
Remember a few months back when our Nashville pals hooked us up with some home-grown, home-smoked and crushed habaneros? (Maybe …

new digs

So much for getting back into the swing of things.  Best just to close my eyes and jump in, right?
Right. So. We moved!
We’re still in Boston, but after so many years in Texas, The Husband and I couldn’t stomach another summer without air conditioning. Those of you who live with A/C will understand, those of you who don’t probably think I’m just whiny. I’m ok with that. I fully admit that I need the temperature regulation so that I can sleep at night and not get cranky. The new digs …

[14 Aug 2008 | 14 Comments | 8,823 views]

The Husband and I flew down to Austin last weekend to finish the last chapter of our time there.
We sold the house.

I'm sad to see it go, but I know some time in the future we'll have another special little house to reshape and make our own. For now, I'll spend some time remembering that amazing kitchen (I'm still kind of shocked that I built that,) our pretty green mosaic tiled bathroom and thanking (and scolding) whoever left Bicoe behind for us to find.

Before and after shots of …
