Shoot It!

A few months ago I talked about teaching my first class in product photography for indie designers at Webs. A few people commented I should teach the class online. I had to bite my tongue because what I couldn’t respond with was, “I know! Wouldn’t that be great? Wait a few months and I’m going to do a class with Craftsy.com!”

Photoshoot Friday, Frick Frick Beret edition

It seems fitting to me that on a weekend I’m spending with my girls that I should highlight a photoshoot from the last time we got together. When we were in Michigan in May, Flint Knits Pam had just finished a pattern for a super cute beret she’d made for JulieFrick. I love so much when my friends can be models because they’re so relaxed and it all looks so natural. Love that.

(Frick is gorgeous, so that makes it easy too.)
Sur bicyclette! (because nothing …

from the knitting failure archive

Last winter and spring I expected to be blogging a lot more while Stitchy and I were touring with the trunk show for Knitting it Old School. Except then I didn’t blog much at all and consequently missed posting a bunch of FOs. I have one particular FO that I’ve been sitting on not because I don’t like it, but because it’s really not my best work at all. Nobody likes to talk about their failures, right? This one isn’t a giant failure, just a failure to listen to instinct …

I love to plan shoots with Thea Colman, because when I get to her house she’s completely up for anything. So when I say, “there’s this great cemetery down the street I’d like to shoot” she doesn’t balk. She just says, SURE! And off we go.

We piled in the car with Stitchy (expert stylist, sweater  smoother and smile getter) and headed over midday last Saturday. I usually prefer to shoot early mornings or late afternoon, but we had …

undercut legwarmers pattern

It’s no secret that I’m usually about 97 million degrees warmer than everybody else and I’m constantly complaining that it’s too hot wherever I am. (How I lasted in Texas for so long, I’ll never know.) So it’s no surprise that in the winter, I can often be found in a pair of mary janes without any socks. I wish I could be one of those people who can wear handknit socks, but I’m just not.

The trouble with Mary Janes in the winter is that my feet do get a little cold. A stiff breeze will go straight up my pantleg and hoooooo, doggie. Brrrrr.

Photoshoot Friday, the first of many (probably)

I’ve been hemming and hawing (and ultimately getting paralyzed) about how to share the photos I’ve taken for all the knitting pattern designers I’ve been working with. I don’t know why it hasn’t occurred to me that I can just make it a weekly feature. I blog really well in my head, I just haven’t had any time to sit and actually blog some of this stuff. I really need to get a huge backlog of work posted, so I’m starting this week. I present to …

yet another Knitting It Old School FO

It’s possible that in 5 years I will have knit everything out of our book and I’m ok with that. It means they’re all projects that I want, which in turn means I am my own demographic. Success!

hey, hi!

When the blog goes quiet, it usually means I’m busy, right? This time it was BUSY-busy and boy howdy, I have not had any downtime. (I even worked while at Rhinebeck!) After TNNA, Sock Summit, a trip to Milwaukee, then Vancouver, then Toronto, then Salt Lake City and somewhere in there starting a new job too, the summer and most of fall has zoomed away.
The most exciting thing has been the travel for what has officially become Splityarn Photography. Every weekend this fall I’ve been shooting and editing. I am …

life among the mosquitos

I know I say this every year, but there is nothing better than a weekend knitting retreat with your friends. Food, gossip, belly laughs, drinks, cheese, food, knitting. I think I should stop calling our KBC weekends a retreat, but I’m unsure what name to give them. Weekend of Shenanigans? Weekend of Cheese? Margarita Madness? I dunno.

We usually organize a swap of some sort for our weekends of tomfoolery (I’m just throwing names on the wall here people) and this year was no exception. Hats!
Heather (ADDKnitter) was …

in a post-apocalyptic future, I’ll look fabulous

Amy Herzog is genius, did you know that? When Stitchy and I  were planning the sci-fiber chapter of Knitting it Old School, we ganged up on Amy and told her that she needed to design our Barberella / Planet of the Apes / Matrix-y sweater in the style of the future past. She resisted at first, but it’s almost impossible to say no to us. (We’re so charming!) Plus it was mostly just math, and Amy loves math. Thus was born the Apocalypta sweater.

The yarn is Berroco Seduce, which is …
