Photoshoot Friday, Harrisville Designs Fall 2014 edition

I’m always tickled when I get the email to set up a photoshoot for Harrisville Designs. Harrisville is a lovely little mill town in the middle of nowhere New Hampshire and everywhere you turn there’s history to shoot. I love it.
This time, in addition to shooting in and around the mill, we shot on a farm nearby.

Hearing vs. Listening

I like to say that I love feedback. I love to hear when someone falls in love with a project bag I’ve made. Or when they tell me my Craftsy class improved their photography. Or that they are complimented on something they knit from one of my patterns. I LOVE that kind of feedback. Who doesn’t? We all like to hear the nice things. So when I say I love feedback, what I really mean is I love to hear the nice things. The not-so-nice things aren’t as lovable. I still appreciate negative feedback, but it takes me a few days to come around to it.

Photoshoot Friday, Springtime in the Winter edition

In November I had the privilege of shooting the pattern photos for Louet’s Spring 2014 collection. Mari of Stitchcraft Marketing flew up from North Carolina and acted as stylist and photo assistant. It was a particularly tricky shoot to wrangle around the weather and backgrounds. It was November in Boston but most of the trees were bare of leaves so we could pretend it was early early spring before the trees were budding. (At least I hope that’s how it looks.)

Shoot It!

A few months ago I talked about teaching my first class in product photography for indie designers at Webs. A few people commented I should teach the class online. I had to bite my tongue because what I couldn’t respond with was, “I know! Wouldn’t that be great? Wait a few months and I’m going to do a class with Craftsy.com!”

Photoshoot Friday, Charleston Tea edition

I always love when Thea pings to set up a photoshoot. She comes stocked with ideas for styling, props and location. Invariably we leave the prop bag in the car, but I love the energy she brings to a shoot. She’s so much fun to shoot with, and I think that comes through in the photos. I never have to ask her to laugh or smile, she’s always just ready.

We had a specific beachy theme in mind for this shoot, but the weather wasn’t cooperating in the slightest. We’d planned …

Photoshoot Friday, Frick Frick Beret edition

It seems fitting to me that on a weekend I’m spending with my girls that I should highlight a photoshoot from the last time we got together. When we were in Michigan in May, Flint Knits Pam had just finished a pattern for a super cute beret she’d made for JulieFrick. I love so much when my friends can be models because they’re so relaxed and it all looks so natural. Love that.

(Frick is gorgeous, so that makes it easy too.)
Sur bicyclette! (because nothing …

I love to plan shoots with Thea Colman, because when I get to her house she’s completely up for anything. So when I say, “there’s this great cemetery down the street I’d like to shoot” she doesn’t balk. She just says, SURE! And off we go.

We piled in the car with Stitchy (expert stylist, sweater  smoother and smile getter) and headed over midday last Saturday. I usually prefer to shoot early mornings or late afternoon, but we had …

styling and photography class at Webs

[flickr id="6831370425" thumbnail="medium" overlay="true" size="medium" group="" align="center"]
I’m so excited to share another fun thing that’s happening! I’m going to teach a class at Webs! While recording the Ready, Set, Knit podcast back in October, Kathy encouraged me to put together a photography class to share some of my knowledge. And when a queenpin like Kathy tells you to do something, you do it!
The class is called “Styling and Photography for Indie Designers” and will be at WEBS on March 17th at 1pm. Officially, it’s described this way,
“Learn how to prepare …

Photoshoot Friday, the first of many (probably)

[flickr id="6118415852" thumbnail="medium" overlay="true" size="medium" group="" align="center"]
I’ve been hemming and hawing (and ultimately getting paralyzed) about how to share the photos I’ve taken for all the knitting pattern designers I’ve been working with. I don’t know why it hasn’t occurred to me that I can just make it a weekly feature. I blog really well in my head, I just haven’t had any time to sit and actually blog some of this stuff. I really need to get a huge backlog of work posted, so I’m starting this week. I present to …

hey, hi!

When the blog goes quiet, it usually means I’m busy, right? This time it was BUSY-busy and boy howdy, I have not had any downtime. (I even worked while at Rhinebeck!) After TNNA, Sock Summit, a trip to Milwaukee, then Vancouver, then Toronto, then Salt Lake City and somewhere in there starting a new job too, the summer and most of fall has zoomed away.
The most exciting thing has been the travel for what has officially become Splityarn Photography. Every weekend this fall I’ve been shooting and editing. I am …
