Everything seems to be at loose ends right now. I had a shipment of zippers go missing off our front porch. My serger needle thread keeps breaking and the whole machine desperately needs to go to the spa. My iron keeps peeing water out from below the plate. All of this 3 weeks before Bazaar Bizarre. Figures, right?

But I'm getting it all worked out despite the irksome setbacks.

I was going to push to have a shop update done before Baz Biz, but with these speedbumps I'm going to …

Is it list time again? October is so crankin' busy this year.
1. I went to London for 10 days. I hardly took any photos other than Project 365 shots because we got the flu almost the instant we arrived. London Flickr set.
2. Box bags. I'm making as many as I can, but they won't go on sale in the shop until December because…

3. I was accepted as a vendor this year at Bazaar Bizarre Boston. I'll be sharing a table with the talented Stitchy McYarnpants. Sharing a table takes some …

The very first set of point and shoot straps are in the Splityarn shop right now along with some new SLR straps and wee pouches.

Whew! That was a lot of work.

Thanks for all the great feedback on the Etsy v BigCartel post. I had my mind mostly made up about leaving Etsy before I even posted it, but I think the reassurances that I wasn’t the only one having challenges cemented it for me. I’m happy to keep shopping with Etsy when I’m pointed directly to shops, but the time has come for me to stop selling there.
I’ve dipped my toe in the water over at BigCartel and the new shop is at shop.splityarn.com. Over the next few days …

When Etsy opened its doors a few years back, I was one of the first to give it a try (I joined in July of 2005.) Not only was I an early adopter, I was a champion for the site. It was an innovative marketplace. It was easy to find new shops, indie crafters and track down great handmade items. As cool as it was, they had problems keeping up with their own success. As the site grew bigger, new listings were harder to find. The fun features for discovering …

I’ve been hard at work all week so I could put another whack of SLR camera straps up in the splityarn shop. The Fed Ex man just dropped off another box of fabric, so if none of the fabrics currently listed appeal to you, there will be more available next week. I think picking the fabrics might be my favourite part of the whole process.

The first set of camera straps are in the shop! At the rate they’re going, they may just sell out this afternoon. (!!) Don’t worry though, I’ll be sneaking in a few more during the week as I finish them. And in a couple more weeks there will be more colours and fabrics to chose from. I’m sourcing out some more manly fabrics as well, ’cause I know some of us have husbands that aren’t thrilled about purple and lime bats.

I love that sometimes the creative process is completely driven by the mundane. The desk in my office is rarely tidy and is usually covered in scraps of fabric and little bits of thread. There are a few other things that sit here and keep me company whether I'm sewing, computing or wrapping up orders. For one, my camera is rarely more than an arms length away.
Scraps, camera. Scraps, camera. I'd been thinking about it for a long time, but for whatever reason yesterday I grabbed a hunk of …

When I was little, my mum was constantly making outfits for me to wear. She sewed almost everything for years. She would even make matching outfits for my dolls and Barbies. Somewhere along the line I started resisting it. I didn't want my shorts to match my shirt. I didn't want coat to match my shoes. Barbie didn't need the same outfit as Baby Tender Love. There was a strict no matching policy developing for me. (I'm mid-thirties and I still don't match my socks.)

In the last few years though, …

I admit it, I've been a slacker. I have so many things to blog about and have yet to put fingers to keyboard to knock out a post. I've been to Philly, I've written a pattern for download on Ravelry, I've sewed 80 million pouches. Proper updates are on the way but I'm going to start with a shop update.
